Such a funny thing happened to me over the years after I got my Master's Degree. I found myself helping family, friends and students with problems ranging from No skills to read, undeveloped social skills to not being able to handle simple life problems, and/or put together a sentence,
I have always found that developing social skills is just as important as learning to read or count. Social skills are skills that help children play well, learn hard and provide the ablility to share with other kids. Social skills are a must when learning how to communicate with others. Parents are the first line of defense here. Parents provide teachers with how a child learns.
Children watch how we, parents, teacher, adults interact with each other. They learn early on how to learn. Yes, that's right. Those little children watch us like hawks. They see us when we are mad, sad, happy or going thru strife in our lives. Children are so observant that they learn from birth "if I cry, I'll get milk", if I don't like something "I won't have to do/see it again. Now that I have your attention, I ask how can a parent give a school aged child help in school
Well there are several ways! First and foremost, TALK to your child, don't do that "ga google" stuff. From the moment they are born talk to them just like you talk to your spouse, mother or father. It is here that children begin to learn how to interact with each other. The most basic social skill - Speech
Next, READ to children. Think about it, children learn so much through reading. Reading teaches us all how to think "out side of the box". Reading let's us escape to that other world, or helps to learn different things in life. Well reading to a child is the same. As I've said before children learn many things from us, thru reading we teach them how to put letters together to form words and words make sentences. What a skill - Reading
OK, now that we have talked about these things, try them with your school aged child. Come back and post a comment. I'd love to know how well you did.
