One of the fascinations I have had is watching and learning how children learn. Yup, children learn in so many ways. Some learn, through reading, some learn through doing and some learn by hearing.
Very often when entering a classroom the first thing to look for is the children's faces. Look to see how they respond to you. You are the leader and they will respond by either listening, laughing or some will try you. Here are my steps to each response:
(Listening) The Name Game: Take their name and make a rhyme out of it. For instance, Valerie she likes celery, celery is green and green is the color of money. Valerie who likes celery do you like money...
(Laughing) The Singing Game: Take a song, any song, use the most rememorable bars for instance: Trouble, Trouble, Trouble, Trouble has been doggn my soul since the day I ment, (the childs name), say their name and ask what color dog would you like to dog your soul?
(Moving) The Twist: Making the twist motion, "Hey everybody -Let's twist again like we did with and say a child's name, she likes to: have the child make a motion to what ever they like to do. Continue on around the room until its back to you.
With these games you can gain control of your class. Children want to please and they love to play why not combine the two to build great classroom management skills.
